Organic Landscaping
We believe that a beautiful and vibrant landscape can be achieved without the use of toxic chemicals that are linked to a myriad of health problems and environmental degradation. For the better part of two decades we have been developing and specializing in utilizing organic and natural solutions for fertilization, weed control and pest management in landscapes. Conventional methods rely on “silver bullet” chemical treatments for every landscape “problem” but in reality most insect, weed and disease problems are the result of many different factors coming together, and therefore require a more thoughtful approach. The first priority is to analyze all of the different factors that may be contributing to the problem. After this, simple natural solutions may alleviate the problem but as a last resort an organic chemical or treatment may be required.
An example would be a lawn that is receiving too much water and therefore has water loving weeds encroaching on the turf grasses. This is actually a quite common problem and the solution is usually simple in that it requires only reprogramming the lawn irrigation to water less frequently but more deeply. With this approach the weeds should die off and become less vigorous and the turf grass will resume it’s dominance in the lawn. A natural copper based broadleaf herbicide could also be used in this case if a speedier outcome is required. Overall this approach can be more nuanced and requires more patience but the long term benefits far out weigh the extra time and effort required to achieve the desired results. Initially a change of perspective is often required when switching to Organic methods. One has to consider the negative consequences of our obsession with the perfect monoculture ideal of the golf course style lawn with it’s accompanying toxic regime of chemicals and instead embrace a more dynamic and natural landscape that can be beautiful, healthy and therapeutic for individuals and the community at large.
